During the May 2017 Global MINDS Summer Institute in Machakos, Kenya, highly qualified students from Kenya and Canada formed international teams and are working to tackle challenges identified by Kenyan partners. Two of the four student teams are addressing challenges identified by CREATE Kenya:
Team MJR is seeking to address the longstanding workforce exclusion and lack of community supports experienced by people with mental illness in Kenya by developing a locally-viable social business that creates employment opportunities and supports overall functioning and well-being.
Team Watetezi (aka Team Advocate) is leveraging CREATE’s proof of concept work to build awareness surrounding mental health and address stigma and social exclusion in Machakos. They are creating an advocacy incubator, designed with and for people with mental illness to share stories and ideas for generating advocacy and awareness campaigns.
